Joint protection for Quarter Horses: Stop & Spin without wear and tear
Anyone who has ever sat on a well-trained Quarter Horse knows the feeling: the hindquarters go deep into the sand, the front legs keep running for a split second, and then the horse stops dead – the perfect sliding stop. Or that moment during a spin when the centrifugal force almost pushes you out of the saddle because your horse is turning so flat and fast.
It is exactly these moments that make us love western riding so much. But let's be honest: whenever I get off my Quarter Horse and take off his saddle, there is this little thought nagging at the back of my mind. These manoeuvres are pure competitive sport. Stops, spins, rollbacks – it all takes a massive toll on the joints, tendons, and ligaments. My gelding always gives 100 per cent in training, but I certainly do not want him to be "past it" by the time he is 12. I want him to stay fit for a long time and enjoy his work, without having to constantly worry about wear and tear.
The daily battle at the feed trough
To support his joints, I have genuinely tried everything over the years. I have cupboards full of tubs and buckets. The problem? He simply will not eat it. Quarter Horses can be incredibly stubborn when something does not suit them.
I have mixed expensive joint powder into his mash – he turned his nose up at it and left the trough untouched. I have tried smuggling pellets into his muesli or hiding powder inside hollowed-out apples. Forget it. He is a master at meticulously sorting out his hard feed. In the end, the expensive powder lay at the bottom of the trough as a white, dusty residue, or he simply blew it out, so the stable aisle got more of it than he did. It is frustrating when you know your horse needs these nutrients for the sport, but you just cannot get them into him. And what does not end up in the stomach simply cannot work.
The discovery: nuvallo move Snacks
A few months ago, a friend at the yard handed me some nuvallo move Snacks. I was sceptical. "Just another snack making empty promises?" I thought. But she simply said, "Try them out, mine absolutely loves them."
I took a closer look at the ingredients and was pleasantly surprised. This is not sugary rubbish, but a functional joint snack. The base consists of linseed cake, rice bran, and linseed – making it completely free from wheat and corn, and gentle on the stomach. That is important to me, as many sports horses do have a sensitive stomach.
What is inside makes perfect sense:
- Glucosamine (1,500 mg) and collagen (2,550 mg) for cartilage and connective tissue.
- MSM (2,250 mg) for regeneration (super important after tough training sessions!).
- Hyaluronic acid (150 mg) for joint lubrication.
Why the "snack" format changes everything
The absolute gamechanger, however, is the format. The nuvallo move Snacks do not smell chemical; they smell natural and appetising. For a horse like my Quarter Horse (approx. 500 kg), I simply feed 6 snacks daily.
No weighing, no mixing, no mess. I give them to him straight from the hand after riding as a reward. He absolutely inhales them! For him, it is praise for a job well done; for me, it is the certainty that the active ingredients end up exactly where they are supposed to.
Especially in phases where we step up the training for the competition season, I doubled the dose for the first two weeks, as recommended by the manufacturer. He tolerated that incredibly well. Since they are free from wheat, corn, and added sugar, I do not have to worry about his metabolism either.
My impression after three months
They say that joint nutrients take time. I have had the nuvallo move Snacks consistently in my locker for about 12 weeks now. And I must say: my gut feeling is extremely positive.
In the past, I often had the impression that after a hard day of training, he would come out of his stable feeling a bit "stiff" the next morning. He needed a long warm-up phase in the jog until he was really swinging loosely through his body. Since we started feeding the snacks, I feel that he is significantly more supple. He seems more motivated and eager to move right from the start. The transitions feel more fluid, too.
A massive plus point for me as a competitive rider: the snacks are ADMR-compliant. That means I can also feed them during the competition season without having to fear a positive doping test. There is no withdrawal period. This gives me peace of mind, because especially at a competition, where the strain is at its highest, the last thing I want is to have to stop his joint protection.
Conclusion
If you ask a western rider what the most important part of a horse is, most will say: "Good legs." With the nuvallo move Snacks, I have finally found a way to optimally support my Quarter Horse, without having to fight a battle at the feed trough every single day.
He loves the taste, I love how easy they are to use, and the good feeling that he is well taken care of. Whether for the ambitious reiner or the leisure rider who wants to enjoy their horse for a long time – these snacks are highly recommended. They are visibly doing my horse a lot of good, and he is ready for the next stop!
