Chondroitin for horses: effects, dosage & effective combinations

You're standing at the paddock, watching your horse and enjoying every effortless step. To ensure this joy of movement is maintained as they age or during intensive training, many riders think carefully about their feeding routine. One term often comes up: chondroitin. But what exactly is chondroitin for horses all about? How can specific nutrients strengthen the joints, and what really matters when it comes to daily support? Here, you will find honest, clear, and confident answers based on research and practice.

Why joint building blocks are so important

Our horses are made for movement. Their joints are true marvels of nature, absorbing enormous weight every day. The joint cartilage acts like a natural shock absorber. The special thing about cartilage: it has no blood vessels running through it. It is nourished exclusively by the joint fluid (synovia). With every movement, the cartilage is compressed like a sponge and, when the weight is lifted, it soaks up nutrient-rich fluid again.

When a horse gets older or performs in sports, the need for nutrients to maintain these natural structures increases. This is exactly where feeding specific joint building blocks comes in. They provide the body with the materials it needs to optimally nourish cartilage tissue, tendons, and joint fluid.

The active ingredients at a glance: how cartilage and tendons benefit

When we talk about joint care, several names of nutrients usually come up. Each of them fulfils its own very specific, important task in the body.

Chondroitin sulphate is an important component of cartilage tissue. The effect of chondroitin in horses is primarily based on its ability to bind water in the cartilage. This gives the tissue its natural elasticity and shock-absorbing function. In research and feeding, it is usually considered in direct combination with other building blocks.

Glucosamine is a direct building block for cartilage development. It can provide excellent support for cartilage metabolism and forms the basic structure from which the body shapes important tissue parts.

Hyaluronic acid is the main component of joint fluid. It gives the synovia its viscous structure and ensures that the joint glides smoothly.

Collagen acts as a structural protein. It is largely responsible for the stability and tear resistance of cartilage and connective tissue.

MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) provides organic sulphur. This is an essential building block for the regeneration and resilience of tendons and ligaments.

Studies indicate that the targeted feeding of such joint building blocks can significantly support natural joy of movement. For example, a study by Forsyth et al. (2006) on older horses showed that an oral combination of joint nutrients had a positive effect on the mobility and gait of the animals.

All these active ingredients have a solid biological foundation. They are real building blocks for healthy joints, most effective as part of a good overall picture of regular, appropriate exercise, good management, and feeding.

Dosage and practice: why patience pays off

When feeding joint supplements, consistency is key. Joint structures work slowly. Consistent feeding over at least 8 to 12 weeks is ideal, even though the first positive changes are often noticeable after just 4 to 6 weeks. Continuous care pays off.

An important note on transparency: many products on the market do not state the exact amount of active ingredients per daily ration, as this is not legally required for animal feed. A clear statement of quantities on the packaging is therefore always a good sign. This way, you know exactly what your horse is getting every day.

The strong team: why combinations make the difference

Many riders look for chondroitin for their horse. In practice, however, it has been shown that a combination of different building blocks provides the greatest benefit, as they target different areas within the joint. The active ingredients complement each other to form a strong matrix.

nuvallo move relies exactly on this synergy effect and uses a highly effective nutrient matrix for this: glucosamine (1,500 mg per daily ration) supports cartilage metabolism, high-dose collagen (2,550 mg) promotes stability, MSM (2,250 mg) cares for tendons and ligaments, and hyaluronic acid (150 mg) supports the joint fluid.

A crossover study by Murray et al. (2017) also provides a positive indication of how valuable a well-coordinated combination approach is for joint function. The great advantage: such a cleverly balanced combination product does not require extreme individual dosages because the building blocks work hand in hand.

The biggest challenge at the feed trough: feeding

However, the best nutrients are of no use if they do not end up in the horse. And in practice, this is often the biggest problem: joint powders.

Powder is dusty, changes the consistency of the feed, and active ingredients like MSM have a strong, often bitter taste. You try all the usual tricks: mixing it into the mash, dampening the feed, preparing sugar beet pulp, or hiding the powder in a banana. And yet, many horses still meticulously sort it out or eat around it. The frustration is immense when you stand at the feed trough in the evening, the expensive supplement is stuck to the bottom, and you wonder if your horse received the full dose at all.

Warum wir das Pulver abgeschafft haben

Exactly because of this personal experience, we didn't ask ourselves how to mix yet another powder when developing nuvallo move. We asked ourselves: how do we ensure that every horse reliably takes in the full dose – and is actually happy about it?

The solution is the nuvallo move Snacks. These are functional joint snacks that you simply feed directly from your hand. A horse weighing around 500 kg gets 6 snacks daily (approx. 30 g). For acute problems, you can simply feed double the amount for the first 2 to 3 weeks. Linseed cake, rice bran, and linseed ensure excellent acceptance and are particularly gentle on the stomach. No sorting out, no stress at the feed trough, but rather valuable support that the horse perceives as a reward.

Because in the end, the best supplement isn't the one with the longest ingredient list or the highest laboratory value. It is the one that actually makes it into the horse.

Who is behind nuvallo

Katja and Andrés are the people behind nuvallo. With over 20 years of practical experience in equestrian sports, we know only too well how important strong joints and functioning tendons are for our horses. In conversations with countless horse owners, we constantly find that clear, honest information is often lacking — and that is exactly why we write these articles, to shed light on the world of feed.
